Art of Giving

April 10-11, 2021

THE ART OF GIVING IS GOING VIRTUAL

Our 2021 Dell Children’s Art of Giving event is going virtual and is set to take place on Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th of April. While our hospital patients will spend the next few months helping to complete our sponsor artwork with our artists via our CCTV system, we encourage your children to participate and give back in our weekend of Artist led virtual creativity. It’s going to be so much fun!

While we are sad we can not have our usual hospital based event together with patients, artists and sponsors kids, the need to continue raising funds for our Art and Music Therapy program remains a priority. Our children have faced very difficult and isolating times during this pandemic, and our Art and Music therapy team have become the hub of our hospital’s emotional healing, expression and entertainment, therefore your ongoing support is needed more than ever!

Art creations that your children would like to donate back to our hospital to help our fundraising, would be so helpful. All artists will be participating either LIVE or via a pre-recorded zoom and all links will be sent ahead of time. Everything you need to know and purchase is below including participant guidelines, participating artists, sign up times, art concepts and supplies. And please email Suellen Brown at sabrown@ascension.org if you have any questions.

Meet The Artists

Jan Heaton

Jan Heaton

My paintings are personal observations of color, movement, and relationships inspired by forms in nature. I prefer the watercolor medium, as I love paper, and the organic manner in which the pigment integrates with the paper. The marks, pigment selections, and translucent layers are precise, thoughtful, and carefully orchestrated. During the past ten years I have been interested in how color in our surrounding environments — particularly nature — influences our personal health and well being. After reading the book Healing Spaces by Esther Sternberg that explores how our immediate environment affects our senses, emotions and immune systems I began a journey to paint what brought me peace. With an emphasis on repetitive, quiet patterns of movement found in nature I focused on line, color, and form. I understand that my paintings may draw different meanings, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My intention is not to impose a specific message to the viewer. I often hesitate to title my paintings, for fear that they will be translated only according to my vision, and close a door to another interpretation. I hope my paintings will allow the viewer to observe a familiar object in a new way and bring them peace.

Date and Time: Saturday 10th April – 10:00am to 11:00am

Concept and Theme: Love one another. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love”. – Mother Theresa

Lesson Objective: Children paint watercolor hearts, and then if they want, can share the love, to family, a friend, a nurse, a doctor, anyone they want to thank. Save a heart or two for me and the Dell kids’ hearts will be framed together.

Art Supplies needed to participate: (1) Crayola Washable Watercolors Set (16 or 8 Colors) Available at Michaels or Target. (1) Strathmore Watercolor Paper, Cold Press 5.5 x 8.5 Pad (12 sheets). Paper (4 sheets) will be trimmed to 4 x 4. Available at Michaels or equivalent at Target. (1) Crayola Five Brush Set. (Multipurpose flat, angled, and round brushes) Available at Michaels or equivalent at Target. (1) Watercolor Palette. Optional item, a divided paper plate works great. Available at Michaels or Target. (1) Pencil with eraser. (1) Water container

Typewriter Rodeo

Typewriter Rodeo loves Dell Children’s Hospital; we each have or have known children whose lives have literally been saved there. Also, we believe strongly in the power of art in every medium to change and improve lives. So, we are more than thrilled to be able to offer our personalized custom poems to the attendees of the Art of Giving! It’s never been more important for communities to gather in support of the services we rely on, and the Art Therapy program at Dell is absolutely one of these.

Date and Time: Saturday 10th April – 11:30am to 12:30pm

Concept and Theme: Prompted by a few exploratory questions, each child will request a poem and within 2 minutes, our Typewriter Rodeo crew will type out a poem while your child watches. This poem will then be read back over zoom (if the child is ok with that) and then after the session is over, Typewriter Rodeo will email photos of the poems and can also post the originals. You will be amazed with what the Typewriter Rodeo team produces, with only a few clues from your child. A truly beautiful and much loved experience.

I’m honored to support Art Of Giving again this year. It’s my favorite way to stretch my artistic wings. I’m inspired by the kid’s pure, creative spirit. I love that this effort helps make Art Therapy possible for the kids at Dell Children’s and believe art is always therapy – albeit subtle and sometimes unintentional. In the words of Jan Heaton – one of my favorite artist-teacher-mentor-friends… Art Is Love.

Date and Time: Saturday 10th April – 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Concept and Theme: “Up in the Air” Collage

Art Supplies needed to participate: I suggest: a piece of card stock or heavy paper, scissors, glue, newspapers, magazines, old books with fun images that you don’t mind tearing out, maps, miscellaneous papers of any kind, handwritten cards and letters, etc…

Finding images that speak to you is half the fun. If you would like to supplement your materials and have a collage kit mailed to your home – just text your name and address to me at (512) 633-4929.

To me, the Art of Giving means recognizing that we are all in this life together. It is a way of saying thank you to those who have been there for me and my family in the past by paying it forward to those who are in need of something I have to give.
It’s a way of bringing a smile, laughter, joy, possibility, and connection.

Date and Time: Saturday 10th April – 2:30pm to 3:30pm

Concept and Theme: Together we are going to be creating a family of fun cardboard characters.

Art Supplies needed to participate: To make our characters you will need 1. cardboard (an old delivery box is perfect) 2. something to color with like crayons, oil pastels, and/or markers 3. scissors 4. elmer’s glue (liquid, not glue stick) 5. plain paper (whatever you have on hand like printer, watercolor)

Jet Baker

I’ve been an Art of Giving artist since 2015. I’m so happy Art of Giving is back. The funds raised by the artwork we make will bring art to many others. Art heals. In 2014 I founded the non profit Share Art Heal. We provide art supplies and instruction to people of ages with the intended purpose of exposing them to the healing experience of creating art. Each june and July I bring local artists to lead projects with the students of the Austin Police Department Youth Leadership Program. And we have delivered over 10,000 of our Share Art Heal art kits to AGE of Central Texas, Helping Hand Home, City of Austin Congregate Meal Program for Seniors, Meals on Wheels, Depelchin Children’s Center, Art from the Streets, Soldiers at Fort Hood to Dell Children’s and others. My current art project is called One Painting Each Day of COVID. I started on March 15 2020 and I’m still painting. At Art of Giving we’ll be creating paintings using a pallet knife. This will be fun for the whole family. That means you too mom and dad!

Date and Time: Sunday 11th April – 11:30am to 12:30pm

Concept and Theme: Pallet Knife painting

Art Supplies needed to participate: Art supplies can be found at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Amazon and maybe Target and Walmart. Pallet knife set (available at Michaels for $2.99). 12 x 12 canvases. A value pack of 7 canvases is $10.99 at Michaels. Get extra canvases so the whole family can paint more than 1 canvas. Acrylic paint. I use 5 colors – black, white, primary cyan, primary magenta and primary yellow. I use Golden paints but there are other less expensive brands. An alternative color palette is primary red, blue and yellow, black, white. But any colors of acrylic paints can be used. I’ll be talking about how I mix cyan, magenta and yellow to get all the colors in my paintings. Plastic coated paper plates and paper towels.

Darcy Edwin

Darcy Edwin

Darcy Edwin is an Austin based artist. She is a printmaker working primarily in woodcut. The inherent struggle of carving into a block of wood and the physicality of printmaking, in contrast with the soft line work and color work provide an incredible base for expressive art making. Darcy’s own art is based around the study of human behavior, and is heavily influenced by her work with individuals with social, emotional, and behavioral disorders. She has previously volunteered with St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s Project Picasso and is so excited to bring the fun of printmaking to the Art of Giving!

Date and Time: Sunday 11th April – 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Concept: Dots, dashes, and lines, oh my! Exploring the world of printmaking through mark making and pattern, using ink on paper.

Art Supplies needed to participate: Pencil, Fine tip black marker, Thick black marker. *optional: medium tip black marker. Cylinders for tracing (I suggest using bottoms of canned goods, condiments, milk jug caps, etc), Ruler. 6”x6” paper “tile” -such as strathmore 100lb Bristol. Optional: colored markers. *For black markers: Pigma Micron are a great option for older children. They are not washable from porous surfaces. Any crayola (fine tip and regular) are excellent options for younger artists.

Artists everywhere benefit when institutions value what they do. When an organization with the scale and importance of Dell Children’s makes Art Therapies a priority, the entire artist community everywhere is validated. Supporting The Art of Giving is my way of saying thank you for the ways the medical center not only supports the wellness of children, but the larger artist community in Austin and beyond.

Date and Time: Sunday 11th April – 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Option for supplies to be sent in the post or for participants to pick up supplies for this project at the hospital beforehand – details are below

Concept: “Reverse Coloring”

Art Supplies needed to participate: Black and White Uniballs pens and Watercolor Base sheets – Pre-Made

Families can select one or more black and white uniball pens. They will be pulling images out of pre-made watercolor artworks like reverse coloring (see below for sample)

About The Art of Giving

Helping our children heal is vital to our future. They ARE our future. Since 2007, Dell Children’s has been providing a whole world of possibilities to thousands of children from 46 central texas counties and beyond. Our high impact healing environment surrounds children with art, nature and a whole host of customized family centered care.

In just 8 years, The Dell Children’s Art of Giving has raised $825,000 for Art and Music Therapy. These non-billable interventions are the best non-medicinal healing tools in modern medicine, helping children work through problems, express themselves, create, sing, be happy, be sad, tell their story, work through family conflict, reveal abuse and neglect or comply with medicine and difficult surgeries and allows kids to just be kids during some long, tough hospital days.
