For decades, the Shivers Cancer Foundation has invested in cancer care across Central Texas, recognizing that lasting progress requires more than meeting immediate needs. This year, the Shivers Cancer Foundation continues that legacy with a transformational $2 million gift to establish the Shivers Cancer Foundation Endowed Chair in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Dell Children’s Blood and Cancer Center (CBCC). The endowed chair will provide permanent support for recruiting and retaining exceptional physician leaders whose work will advance patient care, research, education, and innovation.
It is exactly the kind of investment Dr. Amir Mian, Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, believes is essential.
“Pediatric oncology is a very resource-intensive subspecialty,” Dr. Mian says. “Innovation, education, research, building programs, attracting talent—those things need to start today so that even with variation down the road, the programs are there when there is a need. Because by the time you have a need, it’s already too late.”
Dr. Mian’s words underscore why endowed chairs are so transformative. They create a permanent foundation that allows Dell Children’s to recruit nationally recognized physician-scientists, expand groundbreaking research, and ensure children throughout Central Texas have access to world-class cancer care close to home—for years to come.
